SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is a flagship hospital for Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) and regional referral center for the 16 county southern Illinois region. SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale paves the way to bring big city medicine home. Physicians in over 45 different specialties practice here, bringing expertise and new procedures, but successfully tailoring them to the needs of a rural setting. With 154 beds, SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is Southern Illinois’ largest and most spacious birthing center with Level 2 Plus Special Care Nursery, and it is the only dedicated pediatric unit in the region. We met with Sushmita Shankar, Drug Diversion Specialist at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale since 2017 who shared her experiences of using WasteLog™.
THE CHALLENGE
Previously, we used an outside laboratory for our screening of narcotic waste. It was challenging to safeguard the chain of custody, it incurred great costs to our hospital, and it took a long time to get the test results. Every time suspected samples were analyzed staff were sent home until the results came back. Finally, we realized that we needed to look at alternative solutions available on the market to control everything in-house. This is where WasteLog™ came into the picture!
THE SOLUTION
We selected WasteLog™ because the technology really interested us. The fact that we can test for very low doses of narcotic waste is a big plus for us as a dedicated pediatric unit. We were not able to do that previously. Ease of handling and use was also something we prioritized when we made our choice and so was the ability to send the measurement data from our system directly to our current analytical software, LogicStream Diversion Application. The small sample size required, quick results and excellent customer service offered by Pharmacolog are crucial to us. We can go to the system at any point of the day and perform a quick test.
THE RESULT
Since we implemented WasteLog™ there is no hesitancy in testing and no need to send the samples out anymore. We can do more testing in-house and we get the results immediately. When the results are clear, the staff can go back to work right away.
The ability to visualize the spectral graph of a failed measurement allows for immediate further analysis. The fact that we can build our own library with medications is a huge advantage to us. We especially appreciate the ease of handling,
the quick results and that WasteLog™ saves both time and money.
