How to find the NP Printer’s Operating
System and Patch Level

Finding the "Operating System"

The printer needs to be turned on and at the READY prompt. If there are any error messages on the printer at this time, then this procedure will not work.

A. Press the ONLINE key.

B. Press the DOWN ARROW to SYS INFO. If there is a "Version" menu item but no SYS INFO, STOP. This printer requires the PostScript Level 2 driver.

C. Press ONLINE. The software version will display.

  • If the software version is 3.1, use the PostScript Level 3 driver.
  • If the software version is 2.2.6 or 1.6.0, continue to the next section.

Finding the "Patch Level"

Any software version older than 3.1 has a default PostScript Level 2 interpreter. However, it is possible that the printer has had an update applied to make it a PostScript Level 3 printer. If you are unsure of the PostScript Level of your printer, follow these instructions:

D. This will require a telnet or hyperterminal connection (settings 9600, 8 N and 1), and a root login.

E. Type UPDATES. The printer will respond with a list of the current patches. Look for the following line:

C_POST V_POST SPOOLPOST PASSTHRU JAWS Ver.2002.4 Update

  • If this line is present, use the PostScript Level 3 driver.
  • If this line is NOT present, use the PostScript Level 2 driver.
  • If the printer does not respond to this command, type: more /etc/updates and using the same guidelines as above, look for:

C_POST V_POST SPOOLPOST PASSTHRU JAWS Ver.2002.4 Update
